Neural substrates of prediction, reward, and decision-making
Dr. Montague received the award for his work on the biological substrates that mediate automatic decision-making by man and animal. His theoretical framework provided one of the first quantitative descriptions that connects the physiology and anatomy of the underlying neural substrate all the way up to predictable influences on behavior. Additionally, it has given insight into the physical representation of reward in the primate brain.
