The Chao Physician-Scientist Award is made possible through a generous gift from the Ting Tsung and Wei Fong Chao Foundation. The purpose of this award is to provide funding for young investigators who are beginning their independent research careers. The award will support promising junior faculty members who are in the process of securing K08 or K23 grants but need interim funding.
Up to two awards at $100,000 each are available for one year.
Applicants should have completed their fellowship and be in the process of seeking or awaiting funding of a K08 or a K23 award, or a nationally equivalent award.
A scientific review committee will review each application. Consideration will be given according to the above-mentioned criteria and the alignment of the application with the strategic goals of the College.
Up to two awards ($100,000 each) are available for one year from award notice date. Funds are temporary restricted and may be used to support research, including faculty salary and equipment, but exclude travel (unless travel is necessary to carry out the research; justification is required).
The application should consist of the following. Pages should be typed in Arial 11 pt font, single spaced, ½” margins.

- Letter of nomination from the Department Chair, Center Director, or Section Chief
- Mentor letter of support
- Letter from applicant describing the proposed training plan to be initiated during the award year, including information on mentoring relationships and guidance committee. The letter should also include any relevant information not found elsewhere in the application.
- Lay summary
- Abstract
- Maximum 5 page research summary, including a timeline, describing the project for which funding is requested. References are not included in the 5 page summary and may be inserted as additional pages at the end of the research summary.

- Copy of critiques (and response) from any prior submission of this application or prior K08, K23, or equivalent applications
Application receipt will be acknowledged and applicants will be notified of the approximate date for completion of reviews.
Submissions after the May 6, 2024 5:00 PM deadline will not be accepted.
